How to drape your saree

New to draping? Keep these basics beside you as you practice:

  1. Start with your blouse and underskirt (petticoat) on, and put your shoes on first — heel height changes where the hem falls.
  2. Take the plain end of the saree and tuck it into the underskirt at your right hip.
  3. Wrap the fabric once fully around you, keeping the bottom edge just skimming the floor, tucking as you go.
  4. With the fabric left in front, make 5 to 7 pleats, each about a hand's width, and tuck them in just left of your navel, pleats facing left.
  5. Bring the remaining fabric around your back and up under your right arm.
  6. Drape the decorative end (the pallu) over your left shoulder so it falls behind you, roughly a forearm's length.
  7. Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder; add a second pin at the waist pleats for extra security.
  8. Fan the front pleats so they fall evenly, check the length in the mirror — and you're draped.
