How to drape your saree
New to draping? Keep these basics beside you as you practice:
- Start with your blouse and underskirt (petticoat) on, and put your shoes on first — heel height changes where the hem falls.
- Take the plain end of the saree and tuck it into the underskirt at your right hip.
- Wrap the fabric once fully around you, keeping the bottom edge just skimming the floor, tucking as you go.
- With the fabric left in front, make 5 to 7 pleats, each about a hand's width, and tuck them in just left of your navel, pleats facing left.
- Bring the remaining fabric around your back and up under your right arm.
- Drape the decorative end (the pallu) over your left shoulder so it falls behind you, roughly a forearm's length.
- Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder; add a second pin at the waist pleats for extra security.
- Fan the front pleats so they fall evenly, check the length in the mirror — and you're draped.
